Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial arts and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground-fighting (bringing an opponent to the ground to fight). BJJ evolved from the Japanese martial art Judo, but has grown over almost of century of practice into a distinct fighting art all its own. One of the core principles of BJJ is that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend him or herself against a larger, stronger assailant through the use of leverage, joint-locks and chokeholds. Many people throughout the world have become familiar with BJJ due to its prominence in mixed martial arts competitions. It is considered one of the best and most effective grappling systems on Earth. Live drills and sparring (commonly known as “rolling” in BJJ) play major roles in Gracie South’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum, readying participants for self-defense and, if desired, competition.
Students will need to have a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi to participate in this class. One may be purchased from Gracie South or the student may supply his or her own. Note: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis differ from the common “karate” gi in a number of ways, including design and durability of material. It is important that students purchase authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis.
